Older News
A short time ago, a faithful reader of The Spanking News wrote and asked if I would be interested in some older newspaper stories that featured spanking that he had acquired from different sources. "How old?" I asked him, adding "Anything back to the 70's or 80's I probably have already" He replied that his newspaper articles where from the early 1900's!
"Cool!" I said. "Please send them!"
So below are some (much) older news stories he sent. Originally I was going to display the actual scanned clippings but they are all in rough shape, and in some cases in different parts making reading them a difficult task. If you have ever seen what an old newspaper clipping looks like, you will probably understand what I mean. Anyway, since the stories are not very long I thought I would just type them out for you folks, trying to stay as close as the original format and punctuation of the article as possible. I will start with the oldest stories first.

SERVANT SPANKED BY MISTRESS
Disobeyed Her Order to Stay in on
Sunday and There Was Trouble.
Ailleen Russell, nineteen years old, of 602 East Forty-ninth Street, had her mistress,
Mrs. Rose Komie, of 373 Willis Avenue,
summoned before Magistrate Brann in the
Morrisania Police Court yesterday morning
on the charge of assault. The girl told
Magistrate Brann that Mrs. Komie object-
ed to her going out on Sundays, but last
week she did so. When she returned at
night her mistress, she charged, threw her
over her knee and spanked her, and so vig-
orous was the spanking that she suffered
great bodily pain and much mental an-
guish therefrom. Then she said she was
put out of the house, and her month's sal-
ary fefused her. Mrs. Komie firing as a
parting shot that no respectable girl would
go out of a Sunda.
The Magistrate reproved Mrs. Komie for
being too precipitate, whereat the two wo-
man fell into wild dispute, each charging
the other with assault. Magistrate Brann
then sternly interposed and diplomatically
adjusted the difficulty. The girl was taken
back by Mrs. Komie and went home with
her.

Failure of Mrs. Bailey's Drastic Method
of Persuading Her Daughter
Not to Mary.
HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 14 -Charles F. Halsted, aged twenty-two years, employed at Pratt & Whitney's, in this city, and Miss Estelle V. Bailey of Middletown, aged sixteen, were married last night under peculiar circumstances. They had been looking forward to the time when they should become man and wife, after both had added a few more years to their life. But opposition to their plans had developed in the girl's home.
Her mother insisted that she was still only a child, and also that Halsted's health was not such as would admit of an engagement. Halsted's father died recently of consumption. Last Sunday night Mrs. Bailey sought to show Estelle that she was still a child by giving her a sound spanking with a slipper.
This so infuriated the young couple that they resolved to establish their independence at once. By dint of persuasion they secured the consent of Mr. Bailey, the father, and provided with a marriage licence, presented themselves last evening to the Rev. Dr. Hazen of Middletown at his parsonage.
After the ceremony the bride went to her aunt's, her only possessions being the clothes she had on her back, for her mother would allow her to take nothing from her home, or at least so she believed. Halsted returned to work to-day, with expectation of soon making a home here for his wife.

Girls of 20 Should Be Home by 10 o'Clock,
English Magistrate Rules in Latchkey Case
LONDON, Jan 16 , 1929 -Until what hour should a girl of 20 be allowed to stay out at night? Not later than 10, according to Willesden magistrate Dr. Lloyd Williams. He was called upon to decide between a girl of 20 and her father. The father objected to his daughter going to dances and, as she refused to be home every night by 10 o'clock, he took away her latchkey.
The girl resented the application to herself of the rigid discipline that may have been forced upon her mother thirty years ago. She went to the local magistrate and lodged complaint against her father. To the amazement of herself and many thousands of flappers of the same age, the magistrate supported her father.
"I think he is right;" he said. "What business has a girl like you to stay out after 10? That is quite late enough, and you must obey your father."
By this decision Dr. Williams, scarcely heard of before beyond his own magisterial environment, jumped into the limelight of publicity.
"Ten P.M.!" said one girl of 20. "Why, in a few months, when I have turned 21, I shall be called upon to register my vote at the general election. I suppose my mother or my great-aunt will be expected to lead me by the hand to the polling booth! If I am important enough to possess a vote, I am important enough to possess a latchkey, to me used at my own discretion."
A father, with all the makings of a martinet in him, waxed furious in denouncing the behavior of the modern girl.
"If a daughter of mine, still living in my house, dared to stay out later than I had ordered," he said, "I would not be content with just taking away her latchkey from her. I would give her a good, sound spanking, send her to bed and, if need be, take away her clothes. Disgraceful, I call it, the way parents allow their girls to carry on!"
